The Tremendous Power Of Attitude

Monday, July 5, 2010

Psychologists have always told us that attitudes can influence results. Two scientists decided to conduct an experiment to find out if attitudes could affect seeds. Two identical cans were taken. Into each was poured soil and fertilizer of same quality and quantity, and 23 seeds were dropped into each can. They were both placed in a greenhouse so that they could have the same conditions of weather and temperature. There was only one variable in the experiment, all other things being the same. Everyday, the two scientists came to the greenhouse, and standing before the first can, poured into it all the negativism of which they were capable. They said to the seeds, "You are good for nothing. Nothing is ever going to come out of you, and even if something comes out, it is not going to last," and so on and so forth. Then they came and stood in front of the second can and poured into it all the positivism of which they were capable. "You are so wonderful," they said to the seeds, "and you are going to show wonderful results. It will be a sight to see what is coming out of you," and so on and so forth. This was repeated thrice a day for three weeks. At the end of three weeks, the scientists found that while there came forth only two or three shoots of grass, out of the first can, out of the second can, there came forth whole strands of grass, so strong that they could clutch it and lift up the entire can with its soil and fertiliser.

If this is what attitude can do to seeds what can it not do to tender children?

Positive Thinking

Some thoughts of positive thinking which i would like to share with you.

POSITIVE THINKING

During working with tough deadline or difficult work, an optimist focuses his energies on identifying a solution and planning out flow-charts. He focuses on his mental attitude that admits positive thoughts, words and images, leading to success and happiness.

Our attitudes are shaped through constant conditioning as a result of interactions with family, friends and environment. They are so rooted in us that it’s very difficult to change them. Positive attitude is a hallmark of an optimist professional, who expects to see brightness and sunshine everywhere. His common words are ”I Will”, “I Can”’ “ It’s Possible”. A pessimist would lose his precious time just by thinking about the problem. An optimist would introspect and figure out the difference between the performance and expectations and try and bridge the gap, never losing sight of the goals.

When caught in the soft soil of negativity, one’s misperceptions overcome one’s logical thinking. These irrational themes are manifested in many ways :

Unwanted Comparison:

We magnify the negative aspects of a situation and filter the positive ones. For instance, the common one is, you have been promoted and you have got a good increment. However, the percentage of the increment is below your expectation. You focus on the latter instead of celebrating the former. ( Here you have to see that at least your performance has been noticed and is awarded, expectation is a relative term and differs from person to person.)

Personalizing :

You hold yourself responsible for anything that goes wrong. If the team overshoots the project deadline by a few days, you take complete responsibility and curse your self. ( Instead to analyzing, you prefer to take shortcut for the problem to end the matter.)

Negative Visualizing:

You live in the vicinity of Murphy’s law, expecting anything that could possibly go wrong , will go wrong ! e.g. if you are organizing an interview, you will anticipate that you will not get good office for the interview, panel members may not turn up and if everything goes right then interview candidate may not turn up.

Closed Mindset :

You look things only in Black and White, so the person with whom you are talking is either good or bad, he is either supportive or uncooperative. ( everybody has good and bad qualities, you have to look for only good qualities of him. Moreover analyze before jumping to your conclusion, why the person is bad or uncooperative with you.)

Evaluate your thinking :

Watch your thinking during the course of the day. Check yourself the moment you find yourself edging towards negative thoughts. E.g. Instead of cribbing over lack of resources, think of creative solutions. Similarly, don’t get overawed by the tasks that seems too complicated. They’ll seem less daunting if you break them into smaller units and then address them. If you think that you do not have the expertise in a particular area, look around for experts who can help you. Try and induce more of self acceptance and less of criticism. This will enable you to re-look at the “problem” at the work place as “learning opportunities” and handle stress in a realistic and constructive manner.

Exercise Positive Affirmations :

Susan Jeffers, noted self help author, strongly points that positive affirmation is a proven tool for steering clear of negativity and fear. She explains, “Positive affirmation is a strong positive statement telling us that all is well. Wth constant repetition of this uplifting and soothing statement, the voice of doom and gloom is replaced with thoughts of peace, power and love. “Pin up positive affirmations like “It is all happening perfectly” or “I am powerful and I can do it” at your office desk or in you car, and look at it on your way to work. It has been demonstrated that just repeating, writing or thinking positive statements lend us the strength, whether or not we believe them and if we say affirmations often enough, we ultimately start believing in them ! Positive affirmations can certainly arm us to get back from facing adversity.

Associate with positive people :

Both positive and negative thoughts are contagious. At the workplace one often encounters unhappy souls, who find something wrong with almost everything around them. They point fingers when things go wrong, they grumble, morn and find faults. It helps to steer clear of these people as they rub off their attitude and thoughts consciously or subconsciously. Therefore, it helps to be in the midst of people who are optimist, upbeat and happy.

Positive thinking can empower us in a way that would boost our self esteem, expand our comfort zone and envelope us with well being and health, thus making way for personal and professional growth. It has been rightly said that a positive thinker sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible !!!.

Make a difference

A man was walking down a deserted Mexican beach at sunset.

As he walked along he began to see another man in the distance. As he grew nearer he noticed that the local native kept leaning down, picking something up, and throwing it out into the water. Time and again he kept hurling things out into the ocean.

As our friend approached even closer he noticed that the man was picking up starfish that had washed up onto the beach, and one at a time, he was throwing them back into the ocean.

The first man was puzzled.

He approached the man and said, "Good Evening Friend, I was wondering what are you doing?"

And he replied, "I'm throwing these starfish back into the ocean. You see, it's low tide right now and all these starfish have been washed up onto the shore. If I don't throw them back into the sea, they will die from the lack of oxygen."

"I understand," my friend replied "but there must be thousands of starfish on this beach and you couldn't possibly get to all of them. There are simply too many and don't you realize that this is happening on hundreds of beaches up and down this coast ... can't you see that that you can't possibly make a difference?

The local native smiled, bent down, picked up yet another starfish ... and as he threw it back out into the sea, he replied, "It made a difference to that one!"

You may feel like you cannot make a difference in the world today, but you CAN make a difference in one life at a time.

The Great Spirit Is Always With You

Throughout your journey and daily happenings, never feel afraid, for I am with you. Wake up each morning and know I am here to guide you and you are loved and accepted. Know in your heart and your inner spirit, inner being I will not guide you where you can't walk.

When you feel like you can't go on, know that I love you with all the heavenly hosts above. Each day for you is blessed, as the skies are above, to become whom you were intended - the key is to love.

When you can love with no doubt and no fear and bring forth the guidance you receive from me through your ear, I give you great gifts, all from the source of love.

The paths you take are filled from above, don't walk off that road and remember that dove. I created you and you are one with me, I know the plans I have for thee. So when in doubt, know I will comfort thee.

I created the rainbow as a symbol for all to see and through this guide, I come to thee. The rainbow of love is within thee. Once you find this, I will come and show thee. You can hear my words and feel my heart for I am the one who asks you to forsake all others along my path.

There will be times you will feel like you are unsure. This is when you knock on my door. For all I will do is help thee to see. I gave you a voice so you speak from me, I gave you ears so you can hear me, I gave you vision so you can see me, I gave you breath so you can breathe through me, I gave you scent so you can smell me, I gave you taste so you could feed from me.

The list of gifts are many and endless; each thought you have you are telling me, each word you speak are they from Me?

Listen to your inner spirit, as this is the flame to me. Once you have served me, all others will see this is the truth, the light, and the way. On this path you will face darkness, as well as light. Listen to me for I will set you free. I hold the key to the throne of all the "unknown".

Success Does Not Happen In Isolation

There was a farmer who grew superior quality and award-winning corn.

Each year he entered his corn in the state fair where it won honour and prizes.

One year a newspaper reporter interviewed him and learnt something interesting about how he grew it. The reporter discovered that the farmer shared his seed corn with his neighbours'.

"How can you afford to share your best seed corn with your neighbours when they are entering corn in competition with yours each year?" the reporter asked.

"Why sir, "said the farmer, "didn't you know? The wind picks up pollen from the ripening corn and swirls it from field to field. If my neighbours grow inferior, sub-standard and poor quality corn, cross-pollination will steadily degrade the quality of my corn.

If I am to grow good corn, I must help my neighbours grow good corn."

The farmer gave a superb insight into the connectedness of life. His corn cannot improve unless his neighbour's corn also improves. So it is in the other dimensions!

Those who choose to be at harmony must help their neighbours and colleagues to be at peace.

Those who choose to live well must help others to live well. The value of a life is measured by the lives it touches....

SUCCESS DOES NOT HAPPEN IN ISOLATION. IT IS VERY OFTEN A PARTICIPATIVE AND COLLECTIVE PROCESS

You Can Be Whatever You Want To Be

There is inside you
all of the potential
to be whatever you want to be,
all of the energy
to do whatever you want to do.

Imagine yourself as you would like to be,
doing what you want to do,
and each day, take one step
towards your dream.

And though at times it may seem too
difficult to continue,
hold on to your dream.

One morning you will awake to find
that you are the person you dreamed of,
doing what you wanted to do,
simply because you had the courage
to believe in your potential
and to hold on to your dream.

Think out of the box

Below are the Interview Questions, which were asked in HR Round.....

No one will GET second chance to impress....

Very very Impressive Questions and Answers..... ...

Question 1:
You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night, it's raining heavily, when suddenly you pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for a bus:
An old lady who looks as if she is about to die. An old friend who once saved your life. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.
Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing very well that there could only be one passenger in your car?
This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application.
* You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first;
* or you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to ! pay him back.
* However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.
The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. Guess what was his answer?
He simply answered:
"I would give the car keys to my Old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams."
Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations. Never forget to "Think Outside of the Box."

This is What Interviewer expects from the Interviewee. ....

Value

A well-known speaker started off his seminar by holding up a Rs.1000 note. In the room of 200, he asked, “Who would like this money?”

Hands started going up.

He said, “I am going to give this Rs.1000 to one of you but first, let me do this.” He proceeded to crumple the note.

He then asked, “Who still wants it?”

Still the hands were up in the air.

“Well,” he replied, “What if I do this?” And he dropped it on the ground and started to grind it into the floor with his shoe.

He picked it up, now all crumpled and dirty. “Now who still wants it?” Still the hands went into the air.

“My friends, you have all learned a very valuable lesson. No matter what I did to the money, you still wanted it because it did not decrease in value. It was still worth Rs.1000

Many times in our lives, we are dropped, crumpled and ground into the dirt by the decisions we make and the circumstances that come our way.

We feel as though we are worthless. But no matter what has happened or what will happen, you will never lose your value. You are special – Don’t ever forget it!
